Terahertz wave help new food foreign body detection equipment flies nothing escaped

Japan's Toyohashi University of Technology and Nagoya University of Technology, NTT Electronics jointly developed the use of "terahertz wave" foreign body detection device. Terahertz waves belong to a special electromagnetic wave between a radio wave and light and can detect foreign matters such as insects that can not be detected by X-rays and metal detectors because of their characteristics.

The research team first used the technology in the field of optical communications to realize the miniaturization of a terahertz wave generating device, thereby manufacturing a small detecting device (about 180 cm in height, about 100 cm in width and about 100 cm in height) using a terahertz wave.

Detection of chocolate mixed with flies and other foreign objects, the detection depth of near infrared detector is only about 5cm, while the terahertz wave detection depth of about 15cm. Flies and other insect foreign bodies its characteristics closer to the food, it is difficult to use the detection of metal X-ray detection.

The research team plans to begin next year on the field testing of the test device, the sale of goods after 2020.
