At MANN+HUMMEL, it is of utmost importance to consider the environmental protection needs of customers because customers also need to meet the needs of their end customers and companies. Today, products need to be produced in an environmentally friendly way. The products should be environmentally sustainable throughout the life cycle and should be handled in an environmentally safe manner. As early as 1998, Sonneberg became the first production site for MANN+HUMMEL to introduce an environmental management system. At present, MANN+HUMMEL has 22 plants worldwide that have achieved the internationally recognized ISO 14001 environmental protection standard certification.

Use resources effectively

According to the local environmental protection requirements, MANN+HUMMEL timely adjusted the production structure. The use of new production processes has taken an important step towards energy savings. These new processes include new exhaust gas purification equipment that can significantly reduce energy consumption and allow heat recovery from air compressors. The expertise and technology from the International Energy Working Group have greatly saved the energy of factories and office facilities all over the world.

With the continuous deepening of the environmental protection work of MANN+HUMMEL, the company has strengthened its commitment to make climate and environmental protection a strategic goal. This guideline makes the system supplier MANN+HUMMEL more explicit about its “environmental responsibility”. Through the establishment of an environmental management system and transparent environmental protection standards in the entire group and all production plants, MANN+HUMMEL has achieved high environmental protection requirements, which are even higher than the local environmental protection laws. For example, the education project provided by the MANN+HUMMEL Brazil plant can help children to raise awareness of environmental protection; in Mexico, about half of the forest has disappeared in the past 50 years, and MANN+HUMMEL recycles wooden pallets. Save more than 160 cubic meters of wood annually.

Environmental protection in the production process

The emphasis is on avoiding hazardous substances and the products can be independently decomposed. This is a requirement for pure recycling. For example, devices such as thermoplastics, metal bushings, and rubber seals can be disassembled after use.

MANN+HUMMEL focuses on the development of energy-efficient production solutions. The idea of ​​reducing energy consumption aims to continuously study energy-intensive processes such as injection molding and determine their potential for energy savings. Continuous reduction of waste heat loss and optimization of the injection molding process can help achieve positive results. In addition, preventive maintenance and replacement of smart tools help reduce downtime and therefore improve energy balance.

Modern geothermal energy was used at the new plant in Mannheimer in Jiading, China. The large fluctuations in air temperature and almost constant ground temperature provide ideal conditions for this efficient technology. The energy used to regulate building temperatures is greatly reduced, while at the same time it consumes less resources and emits lower CO2 emissions.

MANN+HUMMEL is also committed to avoiding the use of dangerous substances in the production process. Globally, the Group has reduced approximately 12% of its waste and 7% of its hazardous waste.

Water filtration system

One-third of the world’s population has difficulty getting enough clean water. The growing population, the increasing environmental pollution and the shortage of natural resources have all prompted us to conserve precious water resources. Innovative water treatment technology is crucial. Mannheimer makes valuable contributions by virtue of its extensive filtering expertise. The technology is based on a membrane filter that filters out all possible particles, such as aerosol particles, while the accuracy of the filter bacteria can exceed 99.999%. The result is continuous and clean water.

Car filter

About 70% of a car comes from the supplier's factory. Their contribution to the development of the automobile is quite high. As a development partner and original equipment supplier for the international automotive and construction machinery industries, MANN+HUMMEL contributes to environmental protection through a series of technological developments. The company's products can significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. For example, the greater use of plastics and composite plastics (high-grade recyclable plastics) instead of metal materials opens up new prospects for climate and environmental protection. One of MANN+HUMMEL's key areas is product design, which minimizes pressure loss and saves fuel.

Leader in Composite Plastics Applications

MANN+HUMMEL plays a leading role in the processing of composite plastic materials used in challenging applications in the engine compartment. The use of high-grade recyclable plastic materials can further reduce the impact on the environment, saving both crude oil and weight.

MANN+HUMMEL has been using composite plastic materials for the production of air filter housings for more than a decade. In 2006, MANN+HUMMEL developed and introduced a series of cylinder heads made of composite plastic materials that meet and partially surpass the requirements of new material products.

Since 2009, MANN+HUMMEL has introduced a series of intake manifolds made of composite plastic materials for gasoline, naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines. Development engineers are gradually introducing this concept into the manufacture of other hot-pressed components in order to use composite plastic materials for all plastic components in the engine compartment.
