Japan develops a new method for depolymerizing waste plastics

The University of Yamaguchi of Japan recently successfully developed a new method that uses ionic liquids as solvents and atmospheric pressure experimental equipment to depolymerize waste plastics and convert them into corresponding monomers. It is said that the new method differs from most of the existing high-temperature conditions, and strictly selects methods for depolymerizing solvents and special high-pressure equipment. For example, nylon 6 can be converted into the matrix component caprolactam under the condition of heating (300°C) in the ionic liquid by means of a catalyst.

It is understood that the nylon 6 sample, the ionic liquid and the catalyst are added together into a vessel and stirred under nitrogen gas at a temperature of 300° C. for about 1 hour. After depolymerization of nylon 6, caprolactam can be produced. Caprolactam can be recovered by distillation. When trifluoromethanesulfonyl is used as solvent and N,N-dimethylpyridinamine is used as catalyst, the yield of caprolactam can reach up to 86%. The Center for Energy and Environment Research at the University of North Dakota in the United States believes that this is a result of the recycling of waste plastics with potential applications.
